Safety Technician

Safety Technician

Location: Oklahoma City, OK

Position Summary

Are you passionate about workplace safety and ensuring the well-being of others? Do you have experience with safety compliance and OSHA regulations? If so, United Mechanical is looking for a Full time, motivated and detail-oriented Safety Technician to join our team.

The Safety Technician is responsible for assisting with the implementation, administration, and enforcement of the company's safety program across multiple divisions. This position works closely with management, project teams, and field personnel to promote a culture of safety while ensuring compliance with OSHA regulations, client requirements, and company policies. This is a safety-sensitive position.


Compensation

Starting Pay: $50,000 – $55,000 per year (Based on qualifications and experience)

Paid Time Off (PTO)

United Mechanical believes that time away from work is important for maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Paid time off based on years of service:

  • PTO:
    • Years 1 - 5 = 3 Weeks
    • Years 6 - 10 = 4 Weeks
    • Years 11 and beyond = 5 Weeks
  • Paid Holidays: 7

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and implementing safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA.
  • Advise management regarding safety compliance concerns and preventive actions.
  • Plan and conduct employee safety training.
  • Maintain safety files and records, including state licenses, equipment certifications, and employee training records.
  • Coordinate company drug and alcohol testing.
  • Coordinate client-required random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Request background checks as required by clients.
  • Conduct new employee orientations and onboarding for three divisions under the corporate umbrella.
  • Conduct safety training sessions and presentations.
  • Select and develop weekly toolbox talk topics.
  • Prepare Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) as requested by general contractors.
  • Maintain inventory of PPE, fall protection equipment, and other safety-related equipment.
  • Prepare for and actively participate in OSHA inspections.
  • Investigate accidents and near-miss incidents to determine root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Coordinate Workers' Compensation claims, including:
    • Attending medical appointments with injured employees.
    • Investigating accidents and near-miss incidents.
    • Completing required documentation for submission to the third-party administrator.
    • Following up on all claims.
    • Monitoring and reporting the status of claims and the safety program to management.
  • Maintain OSHA logs and all required safety documentation.
  • Maintain ISNetworld and DISA compliance updates.
  • Approve and code invoices related to the company's self-funded safety program, including Workers' Compensation, post-accident testing, and random drug screenings.
  • Schedule annual and monthly inspections of company-owned safety equipment, including cranes, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and other required equipment.
  • Maintain and update electronic Safety Manuals and SDS books for all companies.
  • Assist Project Managers with contractor prequalification safety documentation.
  • Visit jobsites before work begins to identify hazards and recommend appropriate controls or corrective measures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assign, schedule, and coordinate safety inspections for yourself and other safety professionals at construction jobsites and fabrication facilities.
  • Review safety inspection findings and provide recommendations to company management and general contractors for correcting potential hazards.
  • Work closely with the company's service divisions to support and improve safety programs.
  • Develop, implement, and enforce company safety policies and procedures.
  • Administer disciplinary action for employees and subcontractors who fail to comply with company safety policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Safety Management or a minimum of three to five years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and motivational skills.
  • Strong active listening skills and the ability to understand employees' perspectives.
  • Excellent computer, mathematical, and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret governmental regulations, technical procedures, business contracts, and safety manuals.
  • Ability to prepare reports, business correspondence, and written procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, general contractors, customers, and employees.
  • Outstanding attention to detail and observational skills.
  • Ability to travel to jobsites and alternate locations for meetings, training, inspections, and safety program discussions.
  • Availability to work occasional weekends when necessary to support jobsite safety requirements.
  • Standard Safety Department working hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record (zero-point Motor Vehicle Record preferred).
  • This position is designated as a safety-sensitive position. Applicants must be able to meet all requirements associated with safety-sensitive employment, including successful completion of applicable pre-employment screenings and ongoing compliance with company and client safety policies.

Preferred Qualifications

The following qualifications are preferred but are not required:

  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety Certification or OSHA 30 General Industry Certification.
  • Experience using ISNetworld, DISA, and contractor prequalification systems.
  • Previous experience in commercial or industrial construction safety.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to access elevated work areas using ladders, scaffolding, or aerial lifts.
  • Ability to work at heights, in excavations, confined spaces, and other construction environments.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, speak, hear, and climb stairs.
  • Occasionally required to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
